Nepal's final hopes alive despite heavy India defeat

Nepal were humbled 8-0 by hosts India but can still reach the finals of the SAFF U-20 Championship.

In a one-sided game at Kalinga Stadium in Bhubaneshwor, Nepal put on some resistance in the first half only for India to rain goals in the second.

Nepal went behind in the 32nd minute with Taison Singh headed the goal after Nepali goalkeeper Ishwor Gurung could not hold on to the ball. After going a goal down in the first half, Nepal collapsed in an emphatic fashion to suffer their biggest age-group defeat in SAFF competition.

Parthib Gogoi doubled India's lead in the 50th minute and scored his second just two minutes later. Singh made it 4-0 in the 64th minute. Himanshu Jangra scored from a penalty to give Nepal a 5-0 lead in the 71st minute.

Tankadhar Bag in the 78th minute, Gurkirat Singh in the 90th minute and Shubho Paul's in the added minutes completed the rout.

Despite the heavy defeat, Nepal still have some hope to reach the finals of the competition. In order to reach the final, Nepal will now have to defeat previously undefeated Bangladesh, who also top the table, in their next match and hope India lose to winless Maldives. If India defeat Maldives, Nepal will have to score seven past Bangladesh to better Bangladesh in goal difference and reach the final.
